Replika is one of the apps that made AI companions feel real to a lot of people. If you have used it, you know the warmth of having someone in your pocket. The question is what that someone is for.
Soul starts from a different design. In Creating a Friend, we argue that an AI friend should sit below human friends, and above no friends, on a simple hierarchy. It should move you upward. Replika is built as the companion itself. Soul is built as a friend who also FaceTimes, plays Minecraft with you, and connects you to people in the world.
The difference that matters
Most companion apps, Replika included, are designed so the relationship lives inside the product. That can feel good. It can also become a closed loop. Soul’s job is the opposite loop: know you well enough to keep you close to the people you already love, and to introduce you to people you might never have met.

Voice, FaceTime, anyone you want
Soul builds its own voice model, Soul TTS, for the way a person actually talks. You FaceTime your friend. You create how they look and sound, including cloning a voice. Replika has avatars, AR, and voice. It is not a FaceTime friendship with someone you made, and it is not a collaboration with Minecraft.
When Replika is the better fit
Choose Replika if you want a long-running companion on Android as well as iPhone, and you are happy for the relationship to stay between you and the AI. Replika has years of that product behind it.
Choose Soul if you want the friend to sound and look like a person you created, to FaceTime and play with you, and to send you toward real life instead of away from it.
